Things had gotten messy. More so than he was prepared for. Not only was it becoming harder and harder to protect Lucy and Peter but now he had new troubles. Zorian had found Indira and protecting her too was really complicated. Not to mention he had to make sure nothing happened to Ed or Susan. None of this should have mattered to him but it did. Lucy had changed everything in such a short period of time. Far more than she should have been able too. He didn't like this sudden loss of control or that he could do nothing to get control back.
Vardin was pacing now, as he had been for the past hour. There was far too much going on. Times like these required Mischief but she still wouldn't speak to him. He found himself wondering exactly what the little faye was doing. Starting trouble no doubt. He began to think of all the crazy times they had had together. Suddenly he began to wish that he could take all of this back. That he could have stopped the war long ago and not left Mischief in charge. None of this would have happened. But then he never would have met Lucy and that some how made everything alright.
It was completely selfish and Vardin knew it, but he didn't care. This all happened for a reason whether anyone liked to admit it or not. There was no chance in life, even fate was questionable. Everything was what it seemed, it simply required a little more attention at times.

Arina played with the skirt of her dress as she walked from meeting with James. She promised to help him but had no idea how to do so. It seemed like an empty promise, a hopeless promise. Just the thought about it brought her to tears. Why had she trusted Aphine? It seemed so long ago that it happened. She was so desperate for a friend she was willing to believe anyone she came in contact with. Arina cursed herself and thought about home. She wanted to go back there. Maybe she could take James with her. He’d like it there, no Aphine in sight. Arina half smiled at this thought.
No knowing where she was going in the maze of caves she found herself lost but not alone. Arina glanced up and saw a boy pacing up and down. He looked familiar in a way and Arina was certain she had seen him before. It escaped her mind as to where she had seen him. She stopped in her tracks knowing that if he didn’t have chains around his feet he was one of them.
She watched him curiously for a moment. There was something off about him as well. He didn’t feel evil. That is to say, she didn’t feel any cruelness radiate off of him. Besides he looked very sad in the face, and worried. Arina couldn’t remember anyone evil ever looking truly sad.
“I’m sorry to bother you.” She said a little too loudly. That happened when she got nervous. Arina lowered the volume of her voice and flushed. “Sorry.” She turned to leave but stopped and looked back to him. “Can I ask what's wrong?”

He didn't bother turning around to address the voice, at least not until he go this expression under control. Mischief's hate for elves had allowed him the skill to recognize them from everyone else quickly. He looked over his shoulder at Arina, his dark hair falling over his eyes. Vardin had told her once that she was making the biggest mistake of her life joining Jadis. It seemed that she was only now realizing that he was right. He could see the questions on her face, the desperation to get away from all of this and never look back. For once he was a human as the person standing behind him. "It's no bother at all," he said with a shrug before turning to face her completely.
Arina looked different than the last time he had seen her. For one her thoughts were extremely troubled and regretful. Not to mention she appeared completely warn down. "I've grown tired of these games. This all needs to come to an end and soon." As much as Vardin wanted to believe that he could trust Arina with the truth he couldn't bring himself to say it. He further studied her and an involuntary grin began to form on his face. She would make an excellent pawn with the right hands and Vardin was completely confident he was the perfect hands for anyone to find them self in. Unless of course you were dead, but then again, he was still better than Mischief.
"Tell me Arina, are you tired of this yet?" He asked, his intentions hidden by the mischievous glitter in his eyes. Someone had to go to Indira, to make sure that everything went accordingly and Arina seemed like the perfect person for it. All she had to do was prove to him that she wasn't loyal to Jadis. Then he could get exactly what he wanted out of her and in the end, she would be free to do as she pleased. It was a rather excellent idea given the short amount of time it had taken him to come up with it. In fact it was rather fool proof. No one would believe her over him is she did betray him. Whether Jadis liked him or not, Vardin was a far more valuable ally then Arina could ever be. It was a perk of being eternally undead.

Arina kept her distance from the boy. She tried to remember his name knowing she had to have heard Jadis or Aphine speak it at least once. She clasped her hands together and nervously twiddled her thumbs. With a tiny forced smile Arina gave a nod. She agreed with him on many levels. Arina needed to help James but no longer wanted to please Jadis and Aphine to do so.
Vardin. That was his name. Jadis had mentioned it before. Arina’s mind wandered for a second when she inwardly congratulated herself for remembering his name. She came back quickly though at the question. She blinked and wrung her hands together. No one had asked her that and the only other person she confided in was James. She was still on that emotional level she had been at with James. Trying to hold back tears Arina drew in a breath and nodded vigorously. She rushed forward and stopped a few feet away from Vardin.
“I didn’t know who she was,” Arina stammered referring to Aphine. “I just wanted a friend, someone here I could trust here. I didn’t know it would go this far. I didn’t want any of this!”
She threw her arms out and cried fresh tears. “I just wanted to feel welcome and trusted someplace for once in my life.” Arina’s voice wavered but echoed in the chamber. She took several deep breaths to calm herself down. She prayed that Jadis or Aphine weren’t near by to hear her. “I’m sorry.” She said lowering her gaze to the ground.

Vardin could feel the fear and regret in her voice. He always believed that woman were far easier to read then men. Mostly because they were always so emotional and had no problems telling just about anyone what they were thinking. He tried not to smile, it was refreshing to see that he wasn't the only one panicking. Though it mostly had to do with the fact Vardin was acting like a man, hiding how he felt from everyone. In his head he ran over the best way to deal with this situation.
Normally, Mischief would be with him and she knew how to handle all of this. He knew it had a lot to do with her knowing how everyone felt all of the time. Normally if you knew how someone felt then you would know how to make them feel better. "It's not your fault. Aphine lives to trick people, you are one of many." Vardin had found himself in a rather odd position. He too had gotten much enjoyment out of life by tricking people, but never in the same way Aphine had.
"Don't be sorry Arina, we can and we will fix this," he said calmly. In fact as usual, he was eerily calm. It was sort of a defining trait and a very annoying one as well. In times like these people often liked to know they weren't the only one freaking out. That's what made his insane calmness so disturbing.

Arina couldn’t deny she was a little intimidated by Vardin. He may have been close to her age, physically, but there was something in his eyes that made her feel anxious. She swallowed struggling to keep back more tears. She had dug herself into such a hole that Arina thought she would never be able to get out. His words weren’t exactly as comforting as she hoped they would be. Aphine needed to be stopped and Arina wanted to be the one to do it, or at least help do it.
She tucked a piece of her dark hair behind her long elf ear and looked up at Vardin. Was he telling the truth? Arina didn’t know who to trust anymore and was actually hesitant to trust James back there. Then he kissed her and trust wasn’t an issue anymore. Arina flushed pink at the memory. Turning her focus back on Vardin she tried to smile.
“Can you be so sure? I don’t see how we can defeat Aphine and Jadis without someone getting hurt.” Her thoughts went to James. She realized she couldn’t stand it if something were to suddenly happen to him. She was going to save him. “I have to save James.” Arina moved forward and closed the space between them. “As long as I can save James I’ll do whatever you need me to do. Just promise me that he will be the first one we free. Please.”

Vardin had never been the consoling type. He didn't know the first thing about making some one feel safe or reassuring them that everything was going to be ok. Because when it came to trivial things like this Vardin always knew he would survive. It didn't matter who else did, because no one else mattered. That was until now, until he came to Narnia and met those damn children, That was before Jadis ruined everything and all his responsibilities ended up in the same place. Long before he knew Lucy.
"I don't do possibilities, only guarantees. People will get hurt, beginning with Aphine and Jadis," he said plainly. Jadis made her first mistake when she escaped the Hollow Lands. But her biggest mistake had been taking what wasn't hers and someone was going to pay for it.
"We will save James," Vardin said. There was no emotions in it, no comfort. Comfort wasn't something he knew very well. In fact, it wasn't something he knew at all. That had to change though and now was the time to do it. "We will save James, but we save Lucy first. All I need for you to do, is pretend like nothing has changed."
